Reading Notes: The Monkey King - Reading A

Hello again! Today, we are diving into some more Asian mythology in reading The Monkey King. There is a movie called The Forbidden Kingdom that loosely ties the Monkey King into it's story, so I'm excited to see if I see anything I recognize. The movie is pretty cheesy and awful, but I enjoyed it. Alright, let's do this.

Okay first story down. The Monkey King is made of stone and hatched from a stone egg. The gods were worried at first, I think they should be, but ultimately decided that he was of no concern. I wonder where the conflict will happen to make the Gods worry about the Monkey King.

Story two down. The Monkey King is off to search for immortality for him and his people. I think that's really cool. So far, we haven't really seen any character flaws in him yet. Which is interesting...

Story three down. The Monkey King is kind to strangers. The Discerner knew that the Monkey King was outside his door, seeking immortality and the King did not even have to knock. The Monkey King stayed for a long time. I wonder is his family and people are missing him.

The Monkey King is magic now! WOO!

Wow. The Master straigh excommunicated the Monkey King. Be careful. The last person to be excommunicated from a school was Bane....

Okay! The Monkey King is off to fight the Devil!

The Cave of Kidneys............................

The Monkey King has become a lot more hostile and quick to fight throughout the story. It's part of his progression, but damn.

Okay. We hate the Monkey King now. He's rude and not kind like he was before. Get on the bandwagon. We hate the King.

This was definitely an adventure for the King from start to finish. He started out humble, and after gaining power and immortality, has become quite arrogant and full of himself. He cares for his people and his kingdom, but seeks trouble with other people. He is not satisfied with what he has. And acts without thinking it seems. We will see what the Lord of Heavens has to say about the Monkey King in Reading B.

  1. Hi Rhett! I really love how you do your reading notes. I am just now looking at everyone's strategies and really love yours! I will be doing this next week for sure. I like how you make it more of a conversation and more personal. The notes really show your thought process and the evolution of your ideas. Great job Rhett. Boomer Sooner!
