Introduction of the kid who doesn't know what he wants most of the time

Hello again!

This is an introduction post, so I am going to introduce myself.

My name is Rhett Mixon. I grew up in Norman, Oklahoma. I graduated high school in May of 2016, and attended the University of Oklahoma that following August. I know the streets like the back of my hand and I consider every sidewalk and clock my home.

I still remember the day I moved into the dorms so vividly. And now, here I am. A senior, graduating next May, thinking about going to graduate school.

Everything has gone by SO quickly. It's insane.

When I was a sophomore, I joined the Oklahoma RUF/NEKS and haven't looked back. I've made a lot of friends, a lot of memories, and even more mistakes, but I had (and am still having) the college experience my pop always told me I would.

I'm studying Industrial and Systems Engineering.

"What kind of stuff do you learn?"

Great question!!

I was a resident adviser for two years but decided two years was enough and now I work for the spirit coordinator.

I love to read, and golf, and play basketball, and I dabble in video games every once awhile.

Maybe more than once in awhile.

I'm a HUGE movie guy. I love watching movies. Whatever your favorite movie is, I've probably seen and loved it. I love movies. So much.

The best book I've ever read is the Name of the Wind. It. Is. Absolutely. INCREDIBLE.

I cannot recommend it enough. Be wary though. Patrick Rothfuss, the author, has written two of the three books in the trilogy and we've been waiting on the third for EIGHT YEARS.

It is very frustrating. We've pretty much given up hope that a third book will ever come out.

Instead of giving you my favorite movie, I will give you a list of five movies that I think you should watch.

  1. The Prestige
  2. Good Will Hunting
  3. The Road to El Dorado
  4. The Last Samurai
  5. Sicario
All of these movies are lesser known, except for Good Will Hunting. They are all insanely and you will not be disappointed with a single one of them.

This past summer, I had an internship with BNSF Railway. It wasn't the best experience I've ever had, but that's okay. Staying hopeful for the future.

One day, I'd love to do data analytics for a professional sports team like the Oklahoma City Thunder or do data analytics for OU football. Those are definitely dream jobs.

There is only one career opportunity that I would move to Los Angeles for and that's working for the professional gaming organization, 100 Thieves. Matthew "Nadeshot" Haag is my hero and I would move anywhere to work with him.

Effingham, Illinois.

If you ever find your way to Effingham, Illinois, you have to go to El Rancherito. It is the absolute best Mexican food I've ever had and I will go back one day.

If you find your way to Miami, 1-800-Lucky. Best Asian food I've ever had in my life.

I will never forget these two restaurants.

I think that's enough for my introduction. I talk a lot.

Until next time.

  1. Hello Rhett!!! I had a pleasure reading your introduction and actually find myself quite jealous of it because it is substantially better than mine. I have had the pleasure of knowing you for two years know and I am very excited to get see all the different stories you write on this blog. I went on not only to read your introduction but some of your other post, including your favorite place blog post and found it very fitting that we both have the same favorite place! Hopefully soon we can catch up and talk about our future blog post! Let's catch up soon! I'll even buy your next Jessica Rabbit!

  2. Hi Rhett! I also graduated high school in 2016 and I'm graduating this year too, although I'm graduating in December with is equal parts exciting and terrifying. That's really cool that you're part of the RUF/NEKS. Oh I LOVE movies. I've watched so many movies I couldn't even tell you which are my favorite. One of my favorite things to do for fun is go to the movie theater, though I can't go as much as I'd like because it tends to get expensive fast. I am planning on going to see Rise of Skywalker in December though (huge Star Wars fan here, though the original trilogy is still my favorite). I don't think I've seen some of the movies you mentioned, I'll have to check those out.

  3. Hi Rhett,
My only knowledge about or experience with ISE comes from Kash Barker's statistics class that I took last semester, but it does seem like an interesting field of study. I've only seen one of your five recommended movies (and it was in my high school Spanish class so maybe you can guess which one) so maybe next time I'm looking for something to watch I'll pick one of those.

  4. Hi Rhett!

First of all, props to you for lasting two years as an RA. Based on what I've heard from my friends, I don't think I'd even make it through one.

I'm also a HUGE movie person and love every movie on your top 5. The Prestige is easily one of my favorites as well. I'm a fan of most of Nolan's stuff, but somehow I haven't made my way around to Memento yet, which I've heard is on the same level as The Prestige. You've reminded me to put that back at the top of my watch list!

  5. Hello Rhett, I love the way you write! Your bio is so informative yet fun to read! I believe the way you describe yourself to be interesting! I must look into the book called Name of the Wind. Though seeing as to how you said I would have to wait for a while once I get going for the next one, I am not to sure if I could. Waiting is not necessarily one of my strong suits… It seems like you have done a lot in your life and have yet more to do! I wish you the best!

  6. Hi Rhett! Your intro was very fun to read! The RUF/NEKS are so exciting to watch on game days, and that is amazing that you are apart of the organization! I cannot imagine what it is like to take care of Boomer and Sooner! Also I love the movie Good Will Hunting and have it among my all time favorites! Good luck this year!

  7. Hi Rhett!
I enjoyed reading your post and learning about you. I think it’s cool that you are a part of the RUF/NEKS and are from Norman. I also think it’s super cool that you really like movies. I’m a big fan of The Road to El Dorado myself. The Prestige is good too but I always thought Julia wouldn’t have really drowned that fast. Good luck with the semester!

  8. Oh, this is exciting, Rhett: of course I had to look up Name of the Wind to learn more about it, and it looks absolutely fantastic. You have just bounced that up to the top of my Audible.com book wish list for next month! Whoo-hoo! And I know that feeling of waiting: I waited a long long long time for Philip Pullman's Book of Dust (prequel to the His Dark Materials trilogy), and when it did finally appear, it did not disappoint. I remember he went off Twitter for a while because his editor told him he had to stop all the social media and FINISH THE BOOK, ha ha. And I absolutely love The Prestige. Have you seen The Illusionist? Another great movie about magic... and thank goodness not quite as dark as The Prestige. So, thank you for the book recommendation: I am excited to have found something totally new to me that sounds seriously amazing!

  9. Hello!!
First of all, your major sounds very intense!! My dad is actually an electrical engineer, as well as all three of my brothers, so I know how much work goes into that major. Great job on keeping with it! I know a lot of people get discouraged quite often. Also, I love movies more than anything! What is your favorite genre? I really enjoy dramas and comedies specifically.

  10. Hi Rhett!

I'm also a senior, and it's crazy how fast everything went by! I feel like I should still be a freshman. I'm also a big movie lover, although I haven't seen any of the movies on your list. But I'll take your word for it and look for one of those the next time me and my sister are looking for new movies to watch at home. I'm sorry your internship went so bad, but hopefully you got some take away experience. If I'm ever in Effingham or Miami I'll try to remember those restaurants. Thanks for all the suggestions! :)

  11. Hi Rhett! It is nice to get to meet you over blog, haha. I really enjoyed reading your introduction and getting a little insight into your life here at the University. I think that is really awesome that you have so many hobbies and things you love to do. I love watching movies, so I definitely understand all that you wrote about them. I have seen 4 out of the 5 and I would recommend them also. I also enjoyed your lightheartedness of the introduction when you ended it with your favorite Mexican and Chinese restaurant! I cannot wait to read your stories this semester.

  12. Hi Rhett!

I love your photo of Campus Corner, all of the colors are super vibrant and seeing the telephone booth would definitely intrigue anyone who didn’t go to OU. I feel like I know the streets of Norman like the back of my hand now too, which is so weird because I still remember feeling so lost and like I had no concept of where anything was the first time I ever toured campus back in 2016. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck in this last year of school and I’m looking forward to reading your stories!

  13. Hi Rhett!
It is nice to meet you! I loved how you set up your introduction post; it seemed like we were having a conversation! Unfortunately, I have seen zero of your five recommended movies! I will definitely try to watch your movies when I have the time! I am sorry your internship was rough. Hopefully, you were learn something despite it all! Good luck in your future endeavors!

  14. Hi Rhett!
I'm guessing systems engineering is data analysis type stuff? I'd be interested to learn about what kinds of classes you take. One of my majors is Management Information Systems and we do a lot of database stuff, but data analysis is a big part of it. Working for a sports team sounds like an interesting use of the degree. I guess i never really thought about those types of organizations needing those types of skill sets.
I love movies too! When I was in high school, I worked at a movie store. My "homework" was to watch new releases so that I could tell guests about the movies that were coming out. Your top five list is great! I have seen them all. I think my top 5 would be:
    1. Crash
    2. The Green Mile
    3. Love Me If You Dare (French foreign film)
    4. The Motorcycle Diaries (Spanish movie with English subtitles)
    5. Benny and Joon
The first four are dramas, but the last one is one of Johnny Depp's lesser known films. It is hilarious!
Anyways, great to "get to know you" hope you have a great semester!

  15. Hi Rhett! I too had to look up Name of the Wind and might have to give that one a go at some point. I really like fantasy but if I'm being completely honest with myself, I'm a big Terry Brooks fan and just like some other stuff here and there so I don't call myself a fan of fantasy literature. Unless you count super hero comics as fantasy, then yes I'm a huge fan. Are you still in the dorms? I've heard that a lot of OU students only stay in the dorms for the first couple of years. The fact that you were an RA for two years is impressive. Also, I am super curious what makes BNSF Railway such a bad company.

  16. Hey Rhett! Nice getting to meet you! It really is crazy to think about how fast time flies. I am about to be a senior and have no clue where time as gone so I can not imagine how you are feeling about to graduate. I also love watching movies and will definitely have to take your movie suggestions into consideration next time I am looking for something to watch!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi Rhett! Okay go off. Such an awesome introduction. I like how you suggested movies instead of telling us your favorite movies. I have not seen a single one of those so I will add them to my need to watch list. I also love sports and think it would be awesome if you did do data analysis for the Thunder or OU football!

  18. Hi Rhett! Your introduction was so amusing to read; it was a literal peek into your brain. Every other paragraph I was caught off guard by the topic but in the best way possible. I can only imagine how frustrating it is to be so invested in a book series but have to wait YEARS for the conclusion. That's one of the reasons I rarely read/watch anything that isn't completed. I also love that you offered restaurant recommendations. I feel like we all have those really good food spots that you can't stop thinking about years down the road. Good luck this semester and I look forward to reading more of your stories!

  19. Hi Rhett! Your introduction was so fun to read! I just read your week 7 story and said the same thing about that, so I had no doubt your introduction would be the same. I love how you structured your paragraphs because every single one is something different and I caught myself off guard a few times. I totally understand the frustration you feel about waiting on that book. I used to read a lot in high school, and so many of the books were a apart of incomplete series so my impatient self would have to impatiently wait for the next book to come out. I also like how you still remember those two restaurants still to this day. I thought I was the only one. I ate at this Italian restaurant in Dallas for OU/TX two years ago which I still think about often. Hands down, the best (and most expensive) Italian food I've ate so far. I'm looking forward to reading more of your stories! And congratulations in advance on graduating next May!

  20. Hi Rhett!
It is nice to meet you! I liked how you organized this introduction post! I saw one of the five movies your recommended! Good Will hunting is one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember when I firs saw it I made all of my close friends watch it within a week! I will definitely try to watch your movies when I have the time! I hope you were able to learn from your internship even though it was a tough experience. Good luck this year!

  21. Hey Rhett, you have some great movie choices here. I've seen Good Will Hunting and the Road to El Dorado was my favorite movie when I was younger. It was such a colorful movie and my dad had it on VHS so all the better. I appreciate your choice of favorite restaurants! I've never been there, but next time I visit Miami I will remember the 1-800 number lol. Anyways, Good luck this semester and have fun!

  22. Rhett, my man.
I am so lucky to have experienced some of these great memories with you. Especially your two favorite restaurants. I will always have a love hate relationship with Effingham but you are not wrong when you say that is the best Mexican food you'll probably ever have in your life. Hopefully someday we can go back. Other than that you severely outshined me on this introduction post, great work.

  23. Hey Rhett!

Thanks for sharing your introduction, I really enjoyed reading it! I've only seen Good Will Hunting and Sicario, but I would love to watch the rest on your list. I also think that it's so cool that you're a part of the RUF/NEKs organization, as they are the backbone of OU spirit! I look forward to reading your posts for the rest of the semester

  24. Hey there Rhett! Thank you for sharing a little bit of who you are! It was great to read a little bit about you, and you seem like such a fun and relatable person! I am SO picky when it comes to movies, and so I am really appreciative of your suggestions... I hate to waste my time on a bad movie! It is actually hilarious that you mentioned a restaurant in Miami because I am headed there in three days for a medical school interview! So thanks again for more suggestions!

  25. Hey Rhett! It was great to read your introduction! I think it's really cool that you grew up in Norman and then went to OU, because it allowed you to know the town really well. I remember being really nervous when I moved to Norman. Even though I had been a million times, it was still scary because it wasn't where I grew up. I'm excited to keep up with your blog for the rest of the semester!

  26. Hi Rhett!
I hope you are doing well! The title of your introduction is frankly the story of my life. Congratulations of graduating this year! College is not easy and requires a lot of steadfast determination and hard work. Although I do not read too frequently, I am always a fan of a good movie at the end of the week, so I will check out your recommendations and let you know what I think!
